WatCAR

The University of Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR) conducts advanced automotive and transportation systems research to enhance innovation and competitiveness. More than 115 researchers, the largest university-based automotive activity in the country, undertake leading edge studies for industry partners around the world.

Based in Canada’s largest Faculty of Engineering, we conduct leading-edge research across all of Waterloo’s six faculties including Mathematics (computer software), Science (electrochemistry and nano-materials), Environment (knowledge integration), Applied Health Sciences (kinesiology), and Arts (voice recognition).

WatCAR’s 31 automotive competencies are categorized into five research thrusts, shown in the left column. Click on each thrust for a listing of relevant competencies.

Our vision of the future: Intelligent, connected vehicles powered by clean energy that are lightweight, safe, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

WatCAR serves as a focal point for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Automotive Parts Manufacturers (Tiers I, II and III), and Material Suppliers to identify and access industry-relevant research competencies across campus.
